What Can Be Repaired and What Cannot
Usually Repairable
- Bonded retainer loose on one end – the wire is intact but the composite has failed on a tooth or two. We clean the surface and re-bond it.
- Hawley retainer with a bent or shifted wire – the acrylic is sound and the wire can be adjusted back into position.
- Retainer that feels tight after a short break – often an adjustment problem rather than a broken appliance.
Usually a Replacement Instead
- Clear retainer cracked through – a thermoformed retainer that has split no longer holds teeth reliably. Glue and repair kits change the fit and cause more movement, not less.
- Missing acrylic or a snapped wire on a Hawley – structurally the appliance is done.
- A retainer that no longer seats – if teeth have already shifted, a repaired appliance will not correct that. See replacement retainers.

What to Do Right Now
Stop wearing a broken retainer with sharp edges or a wire pressing into a tooth, since a bent wire can push teeth in the wrong direction. Keep every piece and bring them with you. Do not try to reshape a wire yourself, and do not use household glue on anything that goes in your mouth. Timing: How Soon Can You Be Seen
Retainer problems are handled as short appointments, and we work to fit them in quickly because every week without retention is a week teeth can move. Repair or Replace: How We Decide
We look at whether the appliance is still structurally sound and whether your teeth have moved since it broke. A sound appliance with a loose bond or a shifted wire gets repaired. A cracked-through clear retainer, missing acrylic, or a retainer that no longer seats gets replaced, because a patched appliance in those cases holds nothing and lets teeth keep drifting.
